Ask the Expert - Working Principle of Turbine Flow Meter

These flow meters are precisely designed to measure the flow rate of liquid and gasses in pipelines. They measure the flow on basis of volume. Outputs given by these meters are exceptionally reliable and accurate digital signals. Let’s get into the working principle of axial turbine meters.
Axial turbine meters transform mechanical action of rotors into electrical pulses. The rotor is rotating in the liquid flow encompassing an axis. The turbine rotor is set at a right angle in the path of the fluid. When fluid strike blades of the rotor it produces rotational motion of the turbine wheel. When this turbine rotor spins at stable and steady speed it becomes proportional to fluid velocity. The number of pulses is proportional to the volume of the liquid. The rotor spins and gives output in the form of electrical signals which can be easily noted in GPM and RPM units.  
Advantages of Turbine Flow Meters-
  1. It is widely used for low flow rate liquids.
  2. Highly accurate and reliable for measuring viscosity and range in liquid.
  3. Easy to install and use.
  4. It measures flow rate in non-conductive liquids
  5. It is competent for wide range of liquid and gasses
Disadvantages of Axial flow sensors are as follows-
  1. The fluid which is used should be clean and degradation-free.
  2. It should be installed with precaution in order to avoid errors.
  3. It is essential to avoid cavitations in the pipe that is formed due to the small vapor voids formed on the surface of the liquid.
  4. It requires regular check and maintenance to get accurate results.
