Ask the Expert- Types and Applications of Digital Water Flow Sensors

As we illustrated in our last blog 8 Industrial applications of Turbine Flow Sensor, we would continue with the legacy and would add some more information bits about the flow measurement sensors and meters. Although there are a number of flow meters that are used for different types of industries that are described precisely in our series of blogs. Through this we are trying to inform our readers about various types of the flow meters so that they can select the one appropriate for their industrial use. This blog would be describing applications and types of digital Water flow sensors or meters.


But before we move ahead toward the water flow meters lets us understand the water metering process-

Water metering is a process of measuring the use of water. Generally, Digital Water Flow Seansors are used to measure the volume of water used by building and houses of the certain area. It is also used by water suppliers at different water systems. In most part of the world, water meters use cubic meters or liters as measuring units but some countries also use cubic feet or US gallons under mechanical or electronic measures. Apart from water supply industry, it is also used in food and beverage industry.

Here, we present the two most important types of water meters which are widely used in the diversified industries-

1.       Water Flow Sensor-
It comprises of the food grade plastic valve body, a water rotor, and a hall-effect sensor. When water passes through the rotor, it spins and its speed changes according to the rate of flow. Water flow sensor outputs the corresponding pulse signals. Such devices are largely used in water dispensers and coffee machines to detect the water flow.

What is Turbine Flow Meter?
Turbine flow meter is a flow sensing device that measures the linear velocity of the fluid passing through it. The axial turbine wheel is set in the path of flow. Fluid stream infringes the blades of a turbine wheel, divulging the force on its blades and rotating the pinwheel. When steady rotation speed is achieved, the fluid speed becomes proportional to fluid velocity and determines the readable flow rate of the fluid (GPM, rpm, etc). Angular velocity (RPM) is conveyed to the pinwheel when fluid passes the meter.

Axial turbine flow sensors are widely used for the measurement of natural gas and liquid flow. Turbine meters are less accurate compared to the jet flow meters.
